Uganda is one of the best destinations for chimpanzee trekking in Africa, though chimpanzee trekking may be the most popular attraction in Kibale national park the new chimpanzee habituation experience has also been introduced just like gorilla habituation in Bwindi impenetrable national park
Kibale Forest National Park is located in the western region of Uganda in Kabarole and Kamwenge districts. Kibale National Park is close to the Ndali Kasenda crater area, Toro kingdom in the western region, and it is boarded with a number of protected areas such as Queen Elizabeth National Park, Rwenzori Mountains National Park along Toro Semliki Wildlife reserve.
Kibale National Park is home to our close relatives the Chimpanzees with a variety of 325 different bird species with the endemic spice the Green-breasted pita, with other 12 species of primates, 351 tree species, and different species of mammals including Giant forest hogs, Bush pigs, Elephants, Buffaloes, and many other Wildlife species.
Kibale National Park is composed of 395 square kilometers of land that can be accessed on foot, it is well known for being the best Uganda’s tropical rain forest which inhabits primates like the Chimpanzees, it is also endangered with Olive baboons, Black and white colobus monkeys, red colobus which makes Uganda be the best tourism site in East Africa and one of the World heritage site.
The Park receives an average annual rainfall that equal to 700 meters in the year which occurs in the months of March, May, September, and November. It also ranges an average temperature of 14 c to 27 c where the terrain drops do occur in the open grassland of the forest.
Chimpanzee habituation is a process of making a troop of wild chimpanzees accustomed to human beings and this process can take anything from 2-3 years before the drop is made available for normal habituated group tracking after ensuring that they are fully accustomed to humans
Unlike gorillas chimpanzees are more active and aggressive in terms of movements and being wild in an honest opinion the day to day experience changes based on the availability of food and the specific territory and this experience requires a level of fitness as the chimpanzees move fast and in search of food so you may need to catch up with them making it an active venture and we rate the activity 50% out of 100% but it can be a good expedition for those looking to do research on chimpanzees
Chimpanzee habituation permit price
A chimpanzee permit will cost 250$ per permit for four hours and an average age limit is 12 years to be able to participate in the activity and clients expected at the park by 6 ready to start at 6:30 am as the chimps wake up you should be in the forest
There are many accommodation options in the area but due to the early morning nature of the activity we recommend staying at primate lodge, Turaco treetops and Kibale forest camp which are relatively near the park and primate lodge is inside the park
Though this activity is at its peak during the rainy season most travelers prefer to travel in the dry season that’s from June to September and from December to February but this trip can be booked all year round
